Dr. Chen’s company, Sunrider, successfully petitioned the FDA in 1995 to discontinue the import alert on stevia leaf extract. Sunrider was one of the earliest companies to introduce liquid stevia to the market with Sunectar, in 1984, and later, a more purified and concentrated version known as Sunnydew.

Some consumers and politicians believe the FDA has so far acted in response to industry demands from sugar and artificial sweetener lobbyists. Truth be told, Arizona congressman, Jon Kyl, called the FDA restrictions against stevia sweetener “a restraint of trade to benefit the artificial sweetener industry”. Still, pressure from consumers is beginning to push the FDA to diligently mull over its current ban on stevia sweetener as a food additive. In fact, some forms of stevia have more recently been given the all-clear as a food additive.

Most importantly, stevia contains zero calories and that is useful to everyone, especially those that are diabetic or on a low carbohydrate diet. It is known that stevia is nutritious for the pancreas, which can help preserve normal blood sugar levels.
